3-D Printing Tips & Tricks: Wk 1

The Trade Shades product developers would like to share their personal 3D-Printing experiences with the  3-D Printing community and others interested in the innovative technology.  As  3-D Printing continues to evolve as the new wave of manufacturing across industries, the team at TS continues to develop its knowledge base, technical skills, and expertise along with it.   We learn techniques and best practices that help us in our processes; we want to hand these finds over to others to ultimately contribute to the growing interest of 3-D Printing  in every community. Here are some of our latest technical cues that we have come across that we find to help with the overall quality and consistency of our prints:

  • Decreased layer height improves quality of print and increases overall print time
  • Printing at certain angles above the platform is difficult without assistance of support material
  • PLA requires lower overall temperatures for printing compared to ABS
  • Brim is a base layer around the print to help stabilize the print on the platform and improve overall print efficiency
  • Waiting for platform to cool down post-print makes removal of the model much easier and cleaner
  • Different print patterns (honeycomb, line, octagon, etc.) affect how each layer is printed which alters print time and structural stability
  • Each layer printed is visible on the final model
  • A model that ends with a flat top will show the design of the print pattern chosen (honeycomb, line, octagon, etc.)
  • An initial base line is drawn around model to clean out extruder before model begins printing
  • Material is retracted back into extruder when extruder moves to a different location over platform to prevent seepage
  • Temperature of extruder and bed are different based on type of material used for printing
  • Larger prints show more detail compared to smaller prints of an identical model

Note: Specific to Lulzbot Taz 3.  However, Trade Shades believes that these tips and tricks can span across other brands of printers.
